BUILDING PERMIT PROCESS IN KELOWNA

A plain overview for homeowners. Always confirm current requirements with the City.

THE STEPS

A typical project moves through five stages: confirm zoning and site constraints, design and draw the home, assemble the permit application with any required reports, respond to the City's review comments, then receive the permit and begin construction.

ZONING FIRST

The City of Kelowna Zoning Bylaw sets what you can build on a lot: use, height, setbacks, site coverage and parking. Checking it before design saves redrawing later.

WHAT THE DRAWINGS INCLUDE

A building permit set usually has a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, structural framing and bracing, and energy compliance information. Your site may also need a survey, a geotechnical report, or sealed engineering.

AVOIDING DELAYS

Most delays come from missing reports, drawings that do not match the zoning and slow responses to review comments. A designer who checks the zoning at the start and coordinates reports early shortens the process.

A NOTE ON ACCURACY
